About Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma (AAU)

Ambrose Alli University (AAU), originally known as Bendel State University, was founded in 1981 by the visionary Professor Ambrose Alli. His mission was to address the educational needs of the region, offering more opportunities for higher learning.

However, the path to establishing the university was not without its hurdles. Governor Alli had to navigate significant controversies and pushback regarding the expansion of universities, particularly in an era marked by educational disparities.

In response to these challenges, a dedicated committee was formed in 1981 to carefully consider the creation of Bendel State University. This committee focused on critical aspects such as the curriculum, the structural organization of the university, and the ideal location for its campus.

Despite facing strong opposition, Governor Alli’s persistence paid off when the University Bill was finally passed that same year. This pivotal moment led to the appointment of the Governing Council and other key officials, laying the foundation for the university’s future.

The early days of AAU were not without their struggles. The removal of the initial Vice-Chancellor and Registrar was a significant setback, but the university quickly regained its footing.

Milestones such as the inauguration of the Governing Council, the first matriculation ceremony, and the laying of the foundation stone were all pivotal events that underscored the institution’s resilience and growth.

The university’s development continued with the recruitment of permanent staff, the expansion of infrastructure, and meticulous academic planning. By the 1982/83 academic session, the university had made the monumental move to its permanent site—a significant milestone in its journey.

This move not only symbolized the university’s growth but also marked the beginning of a new chapter in its mission to provide quality education in the region.
