PhD Position: Aquatic Ecosystems: The Alfred Wegener Institute is offering a PhD position to investigate the impact of macroalgae-based packaging on aquatic ecosystems. The successful candidate will join a pioneering research project to assess the biodegradation, absorption of pathogens and heavy metals, and potential transfer of pollutants into food webs. Through this project, the candidate will work towards finding sustainable solutions to the plastic waste crisis and raise public awareness through citizen science initiatives.

Eligibility – MSc in Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Environmental Chemistry, or related disciplines
– Background in marine microbiology and/or marine chemistry
– Proficiency in data analysis, experimental design, and/or public relations
– Scientific curiosity, independence, and interest in knowledge transfer
– Excellent communication skills in English
– Willingness to travel
Tasks – Investigate the rate of biodegradation in different aquatic environments
– Quantify and identify pathogenic microorganisms and heavy metals adsorbed or desorbed from the material
– Assess the potential transfer of these pollutants to surrounding food webs
– Publish and disseminate project results to the scientific community
– Initiate and coordinate a citizen science project to investigate the degradation of the macroalgae material with a local school
