Facts About Georgetown University

  1. Historical Roots: Georgetown University’s origins date back to 1634 when Jesuit settlers founded the Province of Maryland, making it one of the oldest educational institutions in the United States.
  2. Secret Schools: During most of Maryland’s colonial period, Jesuits ran clandestine Catholic schools, defying stringent anti-Catholic laws following the English Civil War.
  3. Founding Vision: The university’s founding was driven by a visionary plan post-American Revolutionary War to establish a permanent Catholic institution for education in the U.S.
  4. Papal Connection: At Benjamin Franklin’s recommendation, Pope Pius VI appointed John Carroll as the first head of the Catholic Church in the U.S., even though the Jesuit order was suppressed at the time. Carroll played a crucial role in Georgetown’s establishment.
  5. Early Start: The school enrolled its first student, future Congressman William Gaston, on November 22, 1791, and began instruction on January 2, 1792, making it one of the earliest operational universities in the nation.
  6. Jesuit Influence: Georgetown’s Jesuit affiliation was restored in 1805, bringing in teachers and administrators who bolstered the college’s reputation and financial stability.
  7. Slavery and Fundraising: In a stark chapter of its history, Georgetown funded its operations and expansion through the sale of 272 slaves in 1838, a significant and controversial event that continues to influence the university’s legacy and commitments to social justice today.
  8. Resilient Foundation: Despite early financial struggles, Georgetown College persevered, relying on private donations and limited profits from local lands to sustain itself.
  9. Pioneering Education: As the first Catholic university in the United States, Georgetown set the standard for Catholic higher education, shaping generations of leaders in various fields.
  10. Cultural Impact: Located in Washington, D.C., Georgetown University has played a pivotal role in American history and politics, fostering a strong connection between academia and public service.

Eligibility Requirements For 2025 Georgetown University GHD Scholarship Program

Applicants to the Global Human Development (GHD) Program should meet the following requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree.
  • Completion of courses in introductory macro- and microeconomics and statistics, with a grade of B or better (or the equivalent, if a different grading system is used). Students must complete these requirements prior to enrolling in the program, and, given that we evaluate applications holistically, applicants who have not yet completed the required courses are not at a disadvantage during the admissions process. This requirement is intended to give students the quantitative foundation that they need prior to their first semester in the GHD program. If applicants did not earn a B or better in one of the prerequisite courses, or if they took the courses more than two years ago, they may be advised to take less formal refresher courses prior to starting the program.
  • Ability to function effectively in English and one other language (students must pass an oral proficiency exam before graduation, so ideally they will have a reasonable command of one foreign language before entering the program).
  • At least 1-2 years of full-time work experience post-undergraduate degree is strongly recommended.
  • Experience living, studying, and working outside of the United States is strongly recommended.
